The Ubiquiti ToughSwitch Pro 8 is a 8 port managed and powered PoE network switch. We highly recommend this network switch to be used where the internet comes into the site and where there are multiple wireless antennas.
This switch is PoE compliant and also support the non-compliant modes of many Ubiquiti antennas. This means that the PoE injector that ships with the Ubiquiti antennas is not needed and they can be connected directly into the ToughSwitch. We do recommend that a Ubiquiti Ethernet Surge Protector (ETH-SP) is still placed between the antenna and ToughSwitch to give the ToughSwitch an extra level of protection from lightening and other extra environmental energy. The switch can also power IP phones, IP security cameras and other devices that use PoE power.
This switch is managed which means it has special software to run reports and run special advanced configuration not available on most network switches. One of the features we like best about this switch when deployed at the front of the network is that the network ports can be virtually separated with port based VLans. This means that of the 8 ports on the switch, four ports can be connected to the Public internet feed for your site and the main incoming antenna. The other four ports can be completely separated and used for your private internal antenna and network. Your network router / firewall connects to both.
The ToughSwitch software is designed to work with the Ubquiti antennas which means it provides additional reporting and status as it relates to the AirOS and antenna software.
The ToughSwitch is very well respected in the industry and lives up to its name. Installers generally consider the ToughSwitch to be more durable than other switches and an excellent choice for the more rugged environment required where the internet first arrives to a site.
